Friends of Turkey Run and Shades State Parks

The purpose of the Friends of Turkey Run and Shades State Parks is to protect the natural and cultural heritage of the parks and to educate the public about this heritage while functioning within the mission of the parks. Our goals are to assist the parks in protecting the beauty and ecological health of the parks, providing interpretive activities that increase the public's appreciation of the parks’ natural and cultural resources, preserving the parks’ historical assets, and conducting scientific and historical research. In so doing, our group seeks to provide opportunities for its members to enjoy the camaraderie of others with similar interests.

For the past few years the Friends have taken a fall field trip to go birding. Of course having one of the pre-eminent birders in the country, Alan Bruner, as one of our Friends makes this an easy thing to plan and look forward to! This year’s trip to the Jasper-Pulaski Nature Center was an amazing experience, with thousands of Sand Hill Cranes flying overhead …

Programs:

The Owls of Indiana: Leslie Grow with the Raptor Rehab Center at Hardy Lake will have live owls to help us learn how their bodies fit their lifestyles.

Owl Hoot Hike: Learn how to hoot like an owl, and then don all the warm clothes that you have for a night hike into owl country. Trails may be slushy and slick so wear appropriate boots and bring a flashlight with you.

Friends' Silent Auction

The 5th annual silent auction will be held on Friday and Saturday, February 1st & 2nd in the Lusk Room of the Turkey Run Inn. This auction is the major fund raising event for the Friends of Turkey Run & Shades State Parks. We, the Friends, solicit items from the community and from our membership and display these items for bidding from Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. through to close of bidding on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
